'Best' Stephen King movie is streaming on 2 platforms - but not Netfli | Films | Entertainment

It’s not as loud as It or as infamous as The Shining, but some Stephen King fans think his best screen adaptation is a slow-burn suspense from 1983.

The Dead Zone was directed by David Cronenberg and blends psychic mystery with and political dread – all supported by a haunting performance from Christopher Walken.

Based on King’s 1979 novel, it follows schoolteacher Johnny Smith, who awakens from a five-year coma with a terrifying new ability: he can see into the future - and the past - with just a touch.

What starts as a gift soon becomes a curse, especially when Johnny discovers a future too horrifying to ignore.

As Johnny has a disturbing vision while shaking hands with a rising politician in a snowy campaign rally, the moment leads him to utter one of the film’s most pivotal lines - and ends up shaping the moral centre of the story.

Despite being over 40 years old, The Dead Zone continues to earn glowing praise from fans and critics alike.

“I thought this was a very good movie,” wrote one viewer in a recent five-star review on reviewing website Rotten Tomatoes, where the film boasts an impressive 89% score. “I always love Christopher Walken. Really, the entire cast was excellent. As far as Stephen King stories go, this is more of a creepy slow burn than outright horror.”

Another fan called it “one of my favourite movies of all time,” adding: “Christopher Walken is outstanding! I remember well many of his key lines.”

“By far the best adaptation of a King novel. Keeps itself very close to the text with excellent performances from all concerned", wrote another commenter. "Just a shame it doesn't receive the same coverage of other King-based films.”

Combining King’s original storytelling with Cronenberg’s distinct directorial touch (Scanners, Videodrome), the film made its lasting legacy. Its impact even extended to the small screen - The Dead Zone was turned into a TV series in the early 2000s, starring Anthony Michael Hall, with the pilot borrowing elements from the movie rather than the book.

With a pace that feels slightly different from King's usual horror tone, The Dead Zone is currently streaming under Amazon Prime’s subscription and is also available to rent on Apple TV.
