Chef shares one tip that will stop rice from going sticky

Cooking rice at home might seem simple, but getting it just right can be difficult. When cooked, rice should be fluffy, separate, and not sticky but it can take a bit of practice. Whether you’re preparing a quick weeknight dinner or a dish for guests, mastering rice is a valuable kitchen skill.

One of the most important steps to ensure your rice turns out perfect every time is rinsing it before cooking, says Foods Guy. Rinsing rice is often overlooked, but it’s the most effective way to avoid the sticky texture which often occurs when cooked.

When you rinse rice under cold water, you're removing excess surface starch that causes the grains to clump together during cooking.

You should swirl the rice in a bowl or under running water until the water runs mostly clear - this usually takes three to four rinses, depending on the type of rice.

Skipping this step is one of the most common mistakes that leads to sticky rice but despite this, it's still a recurrent one that many people make.

Beyond rinsing, it’s also crucial to get the rice to water ratio right. While different types of rice require slightly different amounts of water, a common ratio for long grain white rice is one cup of rice to one and a half cups of water.

Too much water can make rice mushy, while too little can leave it undercooked. If you're unsure, it's better to start with a little less water and add more if needed.

Letting the rice rest after cooking is another often-missed trick. Once your rice is done and the water is fully absorbed, take it off the heat and let it sit with the lid on for about five to 10 minutes.

This resting time allows the moisture to redistribute evenly and helps the grains firm up, making them easier to fluff apart with a fork.

Finally, avoid over-stirring the rice while it's cooking which can break the grains and release starch, leading to clumping.

Instead you should bring it to a boil, then cover and simmer on low without peeking too much.

By following these easy tips, you can ensure to cook the perfect rice every time without it turning sticky.
