Anyone with foxes in their garden urged to leave out lemon peels

Foxes are impressive and resourceful creatures, but gardeners are all too aware of the damage they can cause. The critters are known for their nocturnal excursions in search of food, but often leave a mess in their wake.

But if you're sick of waking up to knocked over bins and newly dug holes blighting your lawn, a cheap and easy method can keep the foxes at bay. Foxes have a much keener sense of smell than human beings, and the mere presence of one type of fruit rind can scare them off.

Combat Pest Control offers various tips on its website for keeping the pesky creatures at bay, including the use of citrus peelings, from fruits like orange or lemons.

"Use compost or food waste bins, ensuring food is tightly enclosed in compostable bags," they said, adding: "A bin lock or weighted lid can also add protection."

According to the firm, regularly cleaning bins with soapy water and "spraying them with vinegar or peppermint tea can also help mask lingering food smells".

Simply keeping your garden clean and tidy, and ensuring it isn't overgrown can also help as cats and foxes like using overgrown areas to hide.

Getting higher fences can also be a helpful deterrent, though it's important to ensure there aren't gaps in them that animals can easily slip through.
