'I tried Yorkshire Tea, PG Tips and Tesco brew to find best'

Today is National Tea Day (April 21), which means that you’ve got an excuse to go and make yourself a cuppa. Not that you needed an excuse!

We all have our favourite brands of tea, but one woman was left gobsmacked when she tried different brands and one she didn’t expect came out on top.

Becca, who posts on TikTok as @beccaeatseverything, and often reviews food, clarified in her video that this was a “blind taste test”. To ensure a fair review, she did “not know which is which” before putting the mugs to her lips.

So which brew would be crowned the winner? Here's what Becca made of options from PG Tips, Yorkshire Tea and Tesco...

Tesco

The first brand she tried was Tesco Finest, coming in at £2.40. Becca described that as being “nice” with “strong flavours” but “not the best” she’d had. She rated it a 7/10, starting off strong.

Tesco Value, which came in at 55p, was described by Becca as “ok flavour and strength” but she did say it was “on the bitter side”. She rated it 3/10.

Then came Tesco's own-brand brew, which cost £1.10, but was “very sour and bitter tasting” despite the fact it was double the price of the Value teabags.

It was the worst of the lot in Becca’s opinion, because she rated it just one out of 10, meaning it was the bottom of the pile.

PG Tips

PG Tips is a blend of 100% black tea – including leaves from Assam, Ceylon and Kenyan regions.

It's popular with those who like their brews to have a bold, smooth flavour. And PG Tips sells more than nine billion tea bags each year.

However, it wasn't Becca's cup of tea. She said it had a “strange aftertaste” and also tasted “cheap,” so she rated it just 4/10.

Yorkshire Tea

Yorkshire Tea is another black tea blend that's extremely popular here in the UK. It combines 10-20 different teas – including options from Assam, Kenya and Rwanda.

The brand is a firm favourite with celebrities like Alan Carr, Noel Gallagher and Sir Patrick Stewart. And it turns out, Becca is a fan too.

She commended the “really nice flavours” that were “easy on the palate". While Yorkshire Tea is a little more expensive at £2, she thought it was well worth it. It took the top spot with an 8.5/10 rating.

Becca's final tea rankings

  1. Tesco own brand – 1/10
  2. Tesco Value – 3/10
  3. PG Tips – 4/10
  4. Tesco Finest – 7/10
  5. Yorkshire Tea – 8.5/10
