Anyone with slugs in their garden urged to do 1 thing

With rainy weather predicted across the country in the coming days, the presence of slugs in your garden may increase. The tiny creatures may overwhelm gardeners by damaging plants and impacting the overall health of the garden.

Gardening experts from Greenside Up have advised gardeners to add one thing that may help to keep slugs and snails away from the green place. According to the experts, burying vacant beer containers in your garden will divert the slugs from your plants. Sacrificing a drop of your brew can be fruitful for the health of your garden, the experts explained.

They said: "Bury shallow plastic containers around your garden (take away containers are the ideal size) and sacrifice a drop of your favourite brew.

"If you can’t bear to give up your drink, pubs may give you something from the slop bucket if you ask nicely."

Experts have advised not to completely bury the container and just leave a small 'lip' above the soil level, "so that beneficial beetles don’t fall in and drown".

Not only this, but gardeners can also pour some beer into a spray bottle to later spray the weeds with.

Explaining the reason behind the idea, the experts said: "As the slugs like the beer so much, the idea here is that they’ll eat the weeds, leaving your veggies alone.

"You would have to question whether you want your garden to smell like a brewery though."

It is also advisable to plant hedges, shrubs (especially those with berries), and trees, that will all attract birds such as blackbirds and thrushes, which eat slugs (and snails).

Experts from GardenersWorld.com said: "If you have room, a wildlife pond is a great addition to your garden – the newts, frogs and toads that use it will also devour slugs."
