PS Plus price increases in even more countries as Sony continues to deliver bad news | Gaming | Entertainment

Just days after confirming plans to raise the prices of PS Plus subscriptions in various Latin American countries and parts of Southeast Asia, Sony is back with additional price hikes in Canada and Turkey.

Effective immediately, new subscribers will be asked to pay $109.99 CAD for a 12-month Essential membership, $189.99 CAD for 12 months of Extra and $224.99 CAD for an annual PS Plus Premium package. That's compared to the previous prices of $94.99 CAD for Essential, $154.99 for Extra, and $189.99 CAD for Premium.

If you're an existing PlayStation Plus subscriber, then the price increases will go live on June 24.

In an email sent to subscribers in Canada, Sony said the price increase will allow the company to "continue bringing high-quality games and benefits to your PlayStation Plus subscription service".

The price hikes in Turkey appear to be even more extreme. According to a report on VGChartz, prices in the region will increase by as much as 55% from June 24.

Needless to say, UK and European customers will be hoping Sony doesn't introduce similar price hikes in the months ahead.

PS Plus subscriptions rose by 20% in September 2023, increasing from £49.99 to £59.99 for a 12-month Essential membership.

PS Plus Extra memberships are currently priced at £99.99, while PlayStation Plus Premium subscriptions are available for £119.99.

While UK customers are yet to be hit with PS Plus price increases, Sony did recently raise the price of the PS5 Digital console from £389.99 to £429.99.

According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony is increasing the prices due to high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.

"With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand," the post reads.

Despite the price increase, Argos customers can still pick up the PS5 Digital Edition console for £389.99.
