Man Utd make offer to Rory McIlroy as Ruben Amorim sends message to 'lifelong red' | Football | Sport![]() Manchester United have invited Rory McIlroy to parade his Masters trophy at Old Trafford after the talented golfer completed a career Grand Slam on Sunday. Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim directed the invitation to McIlroy during a video message to the star on Wednesday. McIlroy enjoyed an outstanding finish at Augusta after lighting up the tournament. He began slowly on the Thursday but put himself in contention on day two by posting the best score of the second round. The 35-year-old stormed ahead on the last day of action but faltered on the final hole as he could only finish level with Justin Rose. He held his nerve in a play-off, however, to finally land the Masters title at the 17th time of asking. “Hi Rory,” Amorim said. “Congratulations for the Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy. “It is really important to us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium. “So I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you.” McIlroy is a lifelong United fan and was asked whether he would take the Green Jacket to Old Trafford following his victory at Augusta. And the ace responded: “If it can inspire some better play, absolutely.” Back in 2023, the five-time Major champion, who was said to have a net worth of £225million at the time, even spoke about investing in the club in the future. Speaking to Sky Sports at the Austin Grand Prix, he explained: “Sports team ownership used to be limited to private equity, and people who had a ton of money. But now sports stars are becoming more savvy and using their money in the right way. “I would love to be able to own a tiny percentage of the club I grew up cheering on as a boy.” He added: “I would have loved to have taken 0.00001 per cent of Manchester United when Jim Ratcliffe took 25 per cent. "And if another opportunity comes my way, I will look at it. But it is not something that has come across our table as of yet.” McIlroy previously paraded his Claret Jug trophy at Old Trafford after winning The Open in 2014 ahead of a showdown between United and Swansea. And Red Devils fans would surely love the opportunity to see him back on the pitch to savour his success after being forced to witness another underwhelming campaign from their football team.
