Drivers given Easter road trip essential to avoid £5k fine

A motoring expert has urged all drivers to put one thing in their car before setting off over the Easter break in a bid to prevent accidents and a serious fine.

With many parts of the UK recently experiencing spells of pleasant weather, many are looking forward to going on lengthy road trips to other parts of the country.

However, Greg Wilson, CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, highlighted that drivers travelling in sunny weather must remember to take some sunglasses with them.

He advised: "Carrying a spare pair of legal sunglasses in your glove box is essential during these brighter months – especially in the UK when we don’t know when the sun will appear.

"Wearing the right pair of sunglasses will help keep yourself and other road users safe this summer - inappropriate eyewear could put you at risk of fines, penalty points or worse."

Whilst many Brits see sunglasses as little more than an accessory, a pair of tinted specs can help to significantly reduce glare from the sun, particularly when travelling at sunrise or sunset.

According to Rule 237 of the Highway Code, motorists must take action if they are dazzled by bright sunlight, either by putting on a pair of sunglasses or pulling over in a safe space.

Failure to do so could result in drivers having less time to react to sudden scenarios on the road and fines of up to £5,000 if glare from the sun resulted in an accident that involved other road users.

Nevertheless, Greg warned that drivers must choose their sunglasses carefully, looking in particular at what category they are rated, in order to avoid further fines and possibly time in prison.

He added: "However, darker sunglasses in ‘category four’, any small fashion glasses, yellow tinted glasses or a pair with large side arms can be deemed too dangerous to drive in.

"Any driver wearing inappropriate sunglasses could be subject to a dangerous driving charge - which potentially comes with hefty fines, penalty points and even prison time."
