How to make baked potatoes golden and 'perfect' using 1 bathroom item

The humble jacket potato is a beloved staple in many British homes, so it’s not unusual to find lots of different versions and recipes for this comfort classic. However, one cooking method that’s been making the rounds online might take the crown as the quirkiest of all.

While it might raise a few eyebrows, using a hairdryer is said to create a golden crunch on your spud. Martin Senders, Philips’ in-house Air fryer Chef, shares, achieving that crispy skin and fluffy interior is all in the preparation. He said: “First, always stab your potato a few times with a fork - this stops it from bursting while cooking and helps steam escape for an even, fluffy inside.”

With a busy work and home life, many people simply don't have the luxury of waiting nearly an hour for the perfect baked potato in the oven - and this is where the microwave comes in.

“To speed things up, microwave it for around five minutes to soften the middle,” advised Martin.

After the middle has achieved the desired consistency, it’s time for the hair dryer hack.

“Some suggest using a hairdryer to remove excess moisture, and in theory, this could help create that golden crunch people love,” Martin explained.

While the idea of using a hairdryer in the kitchen may seem strange, it’s this quick blast of hot air that some believe helps give the potato skin its extra crispness.

However, Martin makes it clear that for the best results, an air fryer is the way to go.

He highlighted: “For the best and easiest results, an air fryer is the way to go – it cooks the potato evenly while crisping up the skin to perfection and doing all the hard work for you.”

The expert added: “After drying, rub the potato with a little oil and salt for extra flavour and crunch, then air fry at 200C for 15-20 minutes until it’s perfectly crisp and golden.

“For an even more intense crunch, finish with one final quick hairdryer blast before serving.”

When cooking part of the recipe is over, it's time to top it with as many ingredients as you like, with possibilities ranging from the classic baked beans and cheese combo all the way to a rich, hearty bolognese.
