Late Queen left guests in stitches with speech at Charles's wedding | Royal | News

King Charles and Queen Camilla are celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary today, and it is likely they will be fondly reminiscing on the big day. As well as the exchange of vows, the King, 76, and Queen, 77, will also most likely be remembering other parts of the day, from the flowers, to the cake, and even the speeches.

While not much is known about what went on at their wedding reception, which was hosted by Charles’ mother the late Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle, it is believed the late Queen made a heartfelt speech. As well as expressing her fondness for Charles and Camilla as a couple, Her Majesty also reportedly made an amusing joke with a reference to horseracing, as reported in Woman and Home Magazine.

Referring to Aintree Racecourse at the annual Grand National steeplechase, the late Queen said in the speech: "They have overcome Becher's Brook and the Chair and all kinds of other terrible obstacles.

"They have come through and I'm very proud and wish them well. My son is home and dry with the woman he loves."

Writing about the late Queen's speech, author Katie Nicholl wrote in her 2022 book, 'The New Royals': "It was an unusually sentimental speech from the monarch and it captured the visceral sense of relief the couple had, in their fifties, being able to make their enduring love official."

As well as attending the wedding reception, Charles’ mother also made sure to be present at the religious service on the big day which was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury in St George’s Chapel.

This pleased royal fans as Queen Elizabeth did not attend the actual civil ceremony between her eldest son and Camilla, which was held earlier in the day at Windsor Guildhall.

Her decision not to attend the ceremony is believed to have been made because of her role at the time as monarch, which also meant she was the head of the Church of England, which discourages divorce.

Despite this, the Queen was approving of her eldest son’s second marriage to Camilla.
