Baked beans are instantly tastier with 1 added ingredient

Baked beans can be made richer and so much tastier if one extra ingredient is added and it is one that you may have never considered before. Baked beans are part of a staple British breakfast and usually come in a sweet tomato sauce. While they are generally enjoyed as they come, straight out of the tin, there are ways to add a little bit more flavour to them. The taste of baked beans along with their quick method for preparation makes them an extremely popular food in the UK, one that has been loved by generations.

Many people add things like salt, pepper, paprika and even chili flakes to give something extra to their beans. However, some home cooks have been sharing their secret hack and it is a sauce that many people are divided on. Worcestershire sauce is used in many dishes but it is not something that we traditionally add to baked beans, even though some people swear by it. Stephanie A Ganz from Simply Recipes said that it is her secret ingredient that elevates it every time.

"Worcestershire sauce gives my baked beans a certain je ne sais quoi that makes them sing," she said in a 2024 post. "Worcestershire sauce is a fantastic kitchen-sink condiment for building layers of flavor in savory dishes, especially beans."

To make her baked beans, she uses Worcestershire sauce with ketchup and brown sugar which makes the tomato sauce similar to what comes in a can of baked beans from the supermarket.

Worcestershire sauce is made from anchovies, shallots, garlic, soy sauce, tamarind, salt and vinegar. It is traditionally used for marinades and dressings or as a dipping sauce for things like steak and burgers.

One Reddit user tried the hack and received many responses from people sharing their thoughts. "This is God tier beans on toast! Yum!" said one person.

Another wrote: "The lunch of true scholars. Next time, try mixing Reggae reggae sauce into the bean sauce, it makes it deliciously spicy."

A third suggested: "Try it with sriracha sauce next time."

"I’d swap the Worcestershire sauce for black pepper," said another.
