BT and Virgin beaten by ‘fastest’ ever UK broadband - check your postcode now

Household names such as BT, Virgin Media and Sky may reign supreme when it comes to Brits picking their internet provider, but if you live in London there is a lesser known competitor that has all those incumbents beat when it comes to pure broadband speeds.

Community Fibre, an independent broadband provider that uses its own fibre network to pipe connections into homes, has started offering a new 5Gbps package that the firm claims is “London’s fastest ever broadband package”. It’s certainly the fastest advertised.

Community Fibre services every London borough and claims this new connection can provide “download speeds that are 72x faster than the national average”. You can head to the Community Fibre website and enter your postcode to check if the service is in your area. If you sign up there are no set up fees, but contract prices rise by £2 every year, starting in April 2026.

Right now though, the starting price for this zippiest of broadband packages is £59 per month, a very competitive price considering what’s on offer here. The company says at the top possible speed you’ll be able to download a 50GB game on your console in 10 seconds.

One thing to note is Community Fibre can only offer this incredible 5Gbps speed - that’s 5,000Mbps - over a wired connection. This works well if you have a desktop computer or games console with an Ethernet connection directly into the Wi-Fi router. Speeds to devices over Wi-Fi are slower, as is always the case with broadband. This package offers Wi-Fi speeds of up to 950Mbps, with additional capacity to better serve several simultaneous users.

I live in London and am a Community Fibre customer (I pay, it’s not a freebie). My package is the 1Gbps tariff, and using a speed test app at the time of writing I was able to record 991Mbps download speeds over Wi-Fi, which is more than the advertised expected speeds of 450-700Mbps.

This means I am getting over Wi-Fi on a cheaper 1Gbps package the same estimated wireless speeds of the more expensive 5Gbps plan. I’d recommend going for a cheaper plan unless you really want the fastest wired Ethernet connection possible in Britain’s capital. This is best if you are a gamer or have a household full of people and devices constantly vying for the best possible speeds.

But the possibility of a 5Gbps connection is undoubtedly impressive and convincingly outdoes BT, Virgin Media and Sky’s fastest connections. Where I live, BT only offers a pitiful maximum 73Mbps, with Virgin at 1,130Mbps.

I was previously with Sky’s Superfast broadband, which was anything but at 35Mbps. Always be sure to check the promised download speeds, as I now pay less for Community Fibre, which is several times faster and more reliable in my experience.
