Downton Abbey 3 trailer promises ‘plenty of tears’ in heartbreaking farewell | Films | Entertainment

Last week, Downton Abbey 3’s title was unveiled as The Grand Finale, confirming the heartbreaking news that it is indeed the final movie in the film and TV period drama.

Universal Pictures screened the first trailer for Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale last night at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

And according to the footage description, we’ll be witnessing an emotional goodbye.

The description reads: “Begins on a horse track with a shot of the Crawleys. Carson announces, ‘Welcome to 1930.’ We see Lady Mary and Edith a few times. Then, one by one, each of the original cast returns to Downton Abbey, with Lady Mary dressed in all red. Several shots of parties and everyone celebrating. It ends with Robert kissing his hand and then placing it on the side of the Abbey.”

Hugh Bonneville’s Lord Grantham symbolically kisses his beloved stately home, and the fact that the film is set in 1930 suggests that Downton Abbey’s future as a family pad could be in jeopardy. After all, 1929 was the Wall Street Crash, so Robert’s stock may have tanked as it had done previously.

Our prediction is the plot will see the Crawleys contending with possibly having to sell up their pile before some wonderful resolution at the end. Yet, as Screen Rant predict, having seen the trailer: “I'm predicting plenty of tears will be shed.”

Downton Abbey is released in cinemas on September 12, 2025.
