Supermarket crisps urgently recalled with 'do not eat' alert

The Food Standards Agency has warned shoppers after 3D Trading recalled Ruffles Sabor a Jamón Crisps due to unlabelled allergens. Point of sale notices in shops that sell the product show customers why the crisps are being recalled and what to do next.

Anyone who thinks they may have purchased the crisps recently has been warned "do not eat" the product due to a life-threatening labelling error. The Food Standards Agency stated: "This product contains milk and soya, making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to soya." These allergens were not labelled in English on the packaging.

Anaphylaxis UK provides important information for those affected by a milk or soya allergy.

There are two types of milk and soya allergies: immediate and delayed. With immediate reactions, symptoms can be mild or moderate, but in some cases, they can cause anaphylaxis.

Mild to moderate symptoms of both allergic reactions include a red raised rash (known as hives or urticaria) anywhere on the body; a tingling or itchy feeling in the mouth; swelling of lips, face or eyes; and stomach pain or vomiting.

Anaphylaxis is a more serious reaction involving difficulty breathing or affecting the heart rhythm or blood pressure. Symptoms include:

  • Swelling in the throat, tongue, or upper airways (tightening of the throat, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing)
  • Sudden-onset wheezing, breathing difficulty, noisy breathing
  • Dizziness and feeling faint
  • Sudden sleepiness, tiredness, and confusion
  • Pale, clammy skin
  • Loss of consciousness
