Drivers are only just realising what the grab handles in cars are for

Motorists may choose a car based on its interior features, but there is one common tool most people overlook. Sharing insights on their blog, experts at Check This Car said: "When you get inside a car, whether as a driver or a passenger, you might notice those sturdy handles above the windows, commonly referred to as "grab handles". While they might seem like a minor feature, they actually serve a variety of practical purposes."

These handles have been part of car interiors for decades, evolving with automotive design and passenger needs. Now a standard feature in most modern vehicles, they assist drivers and passengers as they get in and out.

The car experts explained: "Grab handles provide support when entering or exiting the vehicle.

"This is especially helpful for elderly passengers, individuals with mobility challenges."

A wheelchair user or anyone lacking leg strength can use them for stability as they manoeuvre into a comfortable position. The car handles function similarly to bathroom grab bars.

According to Check This Car, the handles are also useful when "stepping into a taller vehicle like an SUV".

Additional uses for the handles include extra support when driving over rough terrain or making sharp turns.

Grabbing these handles can offer additional stability to passengers, preventing unwanted jostling, especially in backseat areas without secure seat belt comfort.

The car experts added: "Commonly joked about but genuinely useful, these handles can be a support point in an emergency or sudden stops, contributing to safety and comfort."

Additional uses for these handles include hanging items. Many vehicles incorporate hooks near the grab handles, making them convenient for hanging clothes or bags without wrinkling or cluttering the seats.

YouTube channel Bright Side revealed the true purpose of the handle in a video viewed by millions, which sparked a flurry of comments.

Several people admitted to using the car handles incorrectly for years.

One person said: “Your 'Oh no' handle is just called a fear handle. And the way I usually use it is by hanging suits..."

Another added: “They come in handy for hanging your laundry from the cleaners.” A third chimed: “When I was younger, I used to swing on the two car handles!”
