'Prevent limescale from forming' on toilets with 1 household item

According to Paul Kennard, a home expert at HomeServe, who spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk, one household item could "prevent limescale from forming". While household staples such as white vinegar and baking soda do a good job at breaking down limescale inside of the toilet, it's likely to return.

"Pouring 125ml of white vinegar into the toilet once a month and letting it sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing will help break down the limescale," said Paul. "For added effectiveness, sprinkle some baking soda onto your toilet brush while scrubbing." However, the bathroom exterior could also develop limescale deposits, especially around the toilet handle.

"A simple wipe-down with baby oil not only removes stains but creates a barrier that prevents limescale from forming in the future," said Paul.

While the exterior of the toilet is sorted, what about the inside of the toilet?

Unfortunately, the only way to prevent limescale from returning is to keep on top of bathroom cleaning duties.

Paul elaborated: "To keep your toilet fresh and limescale-free, a quick clean twice a week is recommended."

A deep-clean is also recommend "once a month using vinegar and baking soda".

What causes limescale?

The chalky deposit is formed when hard water, full of calcium and magnesium minerals, evaporates, and the minerals are left behind.

Most UK residents will experience hard water issues, with the South and East of England greatly affected.

While costly, there are water filters available to help soften water.

How often should you clean the toilet brush?

Paul said: "The toilet brush, often overlooked and left to build up germs, should be rinsed with soapy water after each use and soaked in disinfectant weekly."

Toilet brushes can be cleaned with either vinegar, bleach or other commercial cleaners.

Paul added: "If you clean it often, your brush can last for years, but if the bristles become frayed... replace it."
