Gardeners urged to stock up on this must-have item before April hits

This gardening item will soon be out of stock according to experts so you should make sure to purchase one now. As the spring sun begins to shine across the UK, more and more people are heading into their gardens - with gardening once again becoming one of the nation's favourite seasonal pastimes.

While many are busy picking up compost and seeds, seasoned green thumbs know there’s one item that always sells out first at this time of year. That item is a multi-purpose garden fleece which is a simple, budget-friendly product that protects young plants from harsh spring weather and pests.

Usually found in supermarkets like Aldi, Lidl, Wilko and B&M for just a few pounds, this gardening essential routinely sells out by April 2 every year.

According to CJS Automation, a company with years of experience in agricultural and horticultural systems, the surge in demand is no surprise.

“Every year, it’s the same,” says a spokesperson for CJS Automation. “Garden fleece disappears in the first few days of April. And by the time people go looking for it, it’s already too late.

“It’s one of the most overlooked tools in gardening,” says the spokesperson. “Whether you’re growing veg, herbs or flowers, fleece gives you a head start - and once April hits, it’s almost impossible to find.”

A garden fleece is a must-have as it can help protect young plants from wind, pests and rain.

It’s also good to have as it creates a microclimate to warm soil and this can boost early growth.

Not only this but the item will keep birds, insects, and rabbits at bay without chemicals while also reducing water loss and helping to maintain soil moisture.

Despite its low price and simplicity, it’s a powerful tool that can significantly improve plant survival and performance, especially during early sowing.

Garden fleece is typically stocked in supermarkets’ seasonal gardening aisles from mid to late March.

But stocks rarely last beyond the first couple of days in April, especially during mild springs when people start planting earlier.

If your local store sells out, you should check online garden centres or DIY stores for rolls of higher-quality fleece.

Look for fleece that’s at least 17gsm for general use, or 30gsm for extra durability.

To use it, drape the item loosely over your beds or pots and secure it with pegs or stones.

You can also use it over seedlings, raised beds, and newly planted vegetables - make sure to keep it dry when it’s not in use so you can use it again.
