Experts have warned of high street store closures around the corner after more than 13,000 shut their doors last year. A new map has revealed the continuing nationwide decline, suggesting that more than 200 shops and banks have disappeared already in 2025. Customers keeping an eye on how much they are spending, commercial rents and the rise of online shopping are all factors playing a part in the trend.

New Look, Select Fashion, Monki and Quiz Clothing have all shut several stores, as fashion brands are impacted hard. In fact, more than half the high street shops that have closed of late have been those managed by clothes retailers, the Mirror reports. Other non-fashion firms affected include WHSmith and Homesbase. More than 60 bank branches have also vanished, with Santander announcing in the week it is to shut another 95 branches as part of an overhaul of its network, meaning around 750 jobs are at risk.

Lloyds, Halifax, Barclays, and Bank of Scotland have already closed branches since the start of this year. The Centre for Retail Research said in January that more than 13,000 high street stores closed in 2024.

Experts also predicted that this year, this total could increase to 17,350 store closures, including more than 14,500 independent retailers.

Dobbies, Superdry and Tresspass

Dobbies Garden Centres is closing 17 locations across the UK, including stores in places like Rugby, Morpeth, and Leicester.

Superdry is closing 25 to 30 stores across Europe, and stores in Bradford and Baildon have closed of late.

Tresspass has closed several locations. In July 2023, it announced six sites, including Norwich and Sutton Coldfield, would shut.

Recently, its Middlesbrough store in Hillstreet Shopping Centre was closed less than two years after opening.
