Petrol and diesel owners told to keep bowl of water on their passenger seat for one reason

Experts at Vanarama said: “Drive as if you have a bowl of water on the passenger seat.

“Every time you apply the brakes, the energy that you’ve paid for in fuel is lost in heat generated by the brake pads and discs.

“Don’t rev the engine unnecessarily when accelerating, just move gently through the gears, keeping the engine speed to a reasonable level, but without labouring it by being in too high a gear.”

Earlier this month, the RAC suggested prices at the pump should come down by at least 6p per litre for petrol.

Meanwhile, the breakdown group predicted that diesel rates would fall by 3p per litre for diesel.

The latest analysis from RAC Fuel Watch shows that Unleaded fuel sits at 136.6;p per litre nationwide with diesel now at 143.31p

Nick Zapolski, Founder of ChooseMyCar.com stressed a bowl of water can provide a “brilliant reminder” to drive carefully.

Nick explained: “Keeping an open bowl of water on your passenger seat is a great deterrent for unnecessary acceleration and braking.

“It sounds a bit strange, but it is a simple and brilliant reminder to drive gently. If you hit the accelerator too hard, you'll see water pour out the sides.

“Likewise, if you're driving too fast and braking hard you'll notice water on the seat. The best bowls to use for this are small cereal bowls, with water about an inch from the top.”
