With March bringing welcome warmer weather, and parts of the UK set to reach 19C this week, many Brits are eager to get back into their gardens. Upgrading their outdoor furniture is often top of the list, but waiting too long to buy could mean missing out on savings.

Over the past two years, demand for garden furniture has soared during the warmer months, leaving many facing long wait times or missing out entirely. Josh Novell, garden furniture expert and director of Polhill Garden Centre, has revealed the exact date shoppers should act to secure the best selection at the best prices. He said: “Last year, searches peaked on 5 May, in 2023 we saw a peak on 2 April, and in 2021 and 2022 demand spiked even earlier, in the last week of March. 

“This year is following the same pattern. We’ve already seen a 150% increase in searches between February 1 and March 1, with 1.3 million searches in the UK just last week.”

To avoid stock shortages or higher prices, Josh recommends shopping no later than March 25. 

Josh says if you buy before these dates, it will be early enough to have a full range of options before demand peaks.

He also says that you won’t be buying so late that you risk missing out or paying more.

If you order now, you’ll have plenty of time for delivery so you’ll be able to get your garden ready for summer.

Once you have it, it’s important to ensure you keep it looking its best and treat it properly for longevity.

Fabric expert Shadmaan Kader, founder of Pound A Metre, has shared his best tips for keeping outdoor furniture in top condition year-round.

“Cleaning your garden furniture at least once a year can significantly extend its lifespan,” says Shadmaan. 

“Start by storing any cushions or upholstery in a dry, ventilated space. Then, clean each material appropriately.”

For metal furniture, you should wipe it down with a damp cloth and mild detergent.

If the furniture you buy is rattan, it’s best just to use a damp cloth and if there are any tricky spots, you should use a toothbrush to get into the cracks.
