Nintendo Switch 2 could be in big trouble as new leak suggests serious competition | Gaming | Entertainment

New reports suggest the Nintendo Switch 2 could have some serious competition in 2025.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to launch at some point this summer, either in May or June based on the latest predictions.

Interestingly, however, new leaks have suggested Microsoft could provide some unexpected competition later this year.

Codenamed "Kennan", an Xbox-branded handheld is said to be in development and could launch later in 2025 "if plans are met".

That's according to a report on Windows Central, which claims the Xbox handheld will be feature an official Xbox guide button, as well as other Xbox "design sensibilities".

Unsurprisingly, it's believed the Xbox handheld will run on a Windows operating system, which means Xbox Game Pass and the Microsoft Store front will be the main focus in terms of games.

However, the use of Windows should also give owners the chance to install Steam and other PC platforms.

Elsewhere, Microsoft is also said to be working on a next-gen Xbox console, which could speed up Sony's plans to launch the PS6.

While the release of an officially branded Xbox handheld could be bad news for the Switch 2, early projections are positive for the Nintendo handheld.

Despite new reports that the Switch 2 could cost upwards of $500, some analysts believe the console will net record-breaking sales at launch. Nintendo is said to be preparing for any such eventuality, having manufactured upward of 8 million units for sale this summer.

The upcoming Nintendo Direct conference should shed light on the price of the Switch 2 console, pre-orders and release date.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct will take place at 2pm GMT UK time on the afternoon of April 2.

In addition to pricing and functionality, Nintendo will also give fans a look at the launch games and other titles releasing later this year.

Based on the announcement trailer, Nintendo is working on new Mario Kart content, complete with 24-person multiplayer.

Upcoming shooter Metroid Prime 4 is expected to launch as a cross-gen release, while third-party games are said to include powerhouses like Doom The Dark Ages.
