Remove any smelly bin odour with 1 natural ingredient

A spokesperson for Method, which supplies home cleaning products, revealed a quick way to deodorise the bin using a natural ingredient. But before getting rid of any funky bin smell, it's a good idea to get into deep cleaning the kitchen bin "every couple of weeks".

While the bin needs to be changed, ideally, at least every three days—or sooner if it's full—a deep clean needs to be a monthly task. The cleaning expert said: "It only takes a few minutes to rinse your bin with hot, soapy water." This could be followed "by a spritz of your favorite anti-bacterial cleaner, like Method’s peach blossom anti-bac all-purpose cleaner".

The Method spokesperson added: "To ensure the product has enough time to activate, make sure to leave the cleaner on the surface for a couple of minutes before wiping it away."

Drying the bin is also key to preventing moisture buildup, which acts as a "breeding ground for bacteria".

A quick wipe-down with a microfibre cloth will ensure the bin is dry.

To help eliminate any future lingering smells, there is a shared kitchen cupboard ingredient you could turn to.

"One particular store-cupboard essential can work wonders for eliminating smelly odours," the expert added. "Baking soda."

The cleaning pro said: "This natural odour absorber helps neutralise nasty smells before they can escape. Just add a light dusting to the bottom of your bin before placing in a new liner."

This simple addition to your bin cleaning routine will help your bin smell fresher for longer.

Even spraying a clean kitchen towel with Method's anti-bacterial all-purpose cleaner before adding a new bin liner provides "an extra boost of freshness".

This extra step can be taken with or without adding baking soda at the bottom of the bin.

What the kitchen paper towel will do, however, is "soak up any leaks and keep things smelling fruity and fragrant".

This will make the next bin cleaning task "a lot less grim," the bin is less likely to smell before its next deep clean.
