Liverpool player ratings vs PSG: Five 5/10s flop in Champions League penalty heartbreak | Football | Sport

Liverpool suffered heartbreak in the Champions League on Tuesday night as they were dumped out by Paris Saint-Germain after a penalty shootout at Anfield. The match ended 1-1 after extra-time, with PSG ultimately progressing.

The game proved to be a frenetic affair in the early stages as both sides searched for a route to goal. And Ousmane Dembele opened the scoring for the visitors 12 minutes into the match to level the scores on aggregate as he stole in between Alisson and Ibrahima Konate to divert the ball into an open net.

The teams continued to attack at will, with Liverpool looking the more likely to score in the second half. But they failed to beat Gianluigi Donnarumma as the game headed into extra-time, before being decided on spot kicks.

And Express Sport brings readers the Liverpool player ratings following the entertaining showdown at Anfield.

Liverpool player ratings vs PSG (4-2-3-1)

Alisson: 8

Was forced into a number of saves early on as Liverpool were put under huge pressure once again by their rivals. Saved well from Dembele in extra-time. Always looks assured between the sticks and was sensational in both legs of the tie.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: 7

Showed his attacking prowess but almost cost his side a goal in the first half as he gave the ball away in midfield before Alisson came to his rescue. Attempted to link-up with Salah down the right all night following their clash on the training pitch ahead of the match.

Struck the post in the early stages of the second half and then teed-up Szoboszlai to put the ball in the back of the net. But the goal was ruled out for offside. Was forced off with an injury with 16 minutes of normal time remaining.

Ibrahima Konate: 5

Failed to cut out the cross to Dembele before the opening goal as he got in the way of his keeper. Tested Donnarumma from long-range in the first half as the PSG keeper diverted the ball out for a corner.

Virgil van Dijk: 5

Made a few errors and looked far too relaxed on such a big European night for his side. Looked shaky and couldn’t galvanise his centre-back partner Konate as PSG threatened.

Andy Robertson: 6

Was given the licence to push forward and showed that he still has plenty of energy to impact the Reds team.

Alexis Mac Allister: 6

Held things together in the centre of the pitch but needed to push forward more. Lost the ball in midfield on the half-hour mark as the visitors had the chance to double their lead.

Ryan Gravenberch: 6

Deflected an effort from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia behind for a corner 10 minutes before the interval when the Georgian looked certain to score. But looked sluggish and left too many gaps in midfield for PSG to exploit.

Dominik Szoboszlai: 8

Was heavily involved in Liverpool’s attacking play and was unlucky not to win a penalty for his side just before the break. Had a goal ruled out in the second half and looked like scoring on a number of occasions. Has been one of his side’s best players this season and put in another huge shift at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah: 6

Missed a gilt-edged chance in the opening moments as Nuno Mendes got a block in. Nearly broke the deadlock minutes later but curled his effort wide. Went down in the penalty area after a challenge from Mendes but was denied a spot kick. The PSG defender stood up to him well and got the better of the Egyptian on the night.

Luis Diaz: 5

Tried to be direct but has only scored once in his last 17 appearances and couldn’t add to his tally. Forced Donnarumma into a fine save with a header in the second half, but was offside anyway. Then dawdled on the ball when in a good position to score just before the hour mark. May find himself out of the team when Cody Gakpo is fully fit.

Diogo Jota: 6

Worked hard off the ball to put the PSG defence under pressure and forced his opponents into a number of errors. But looked rusty in front of goal at times.

Substitutions

Darwin Nunez: 5

Was brought on for Diogo Jota with 20 minutes remaining to cause chaos in the PSG defence. Had little impact and missed his spot kick.

Jarell Quansah: 7

Came on for the injured Trent Alexander-Arnold and slotted in at right-back. Looked sharp and hit the post with a header.

Curtis Jones: 5

Came on for Alexis Mac Allister at the start of extra-time but was caught on the ball three times in 15 minutes. Then missed from 12 yards.

Cody Gakpo: 6

Eventually came on in extra-time in the place of Luis Diaz.

Harvey Elliott: 6

Was Liverpool's penultimate change of the night. Couldn't repeat his feat from last week in France where he bagged the winner with his first touch.

Wataru Endo: 6

Was introduced at centre-back in the second half of extra-time as Konate came off.
