Expert urges gardeners to do 15 crucial jobs in March

A gardening expert has listed the 15 jobs you should do this month. The weather is beginning to turn in the UK as meteorological spring begins. The change of season means different things are on the itinerary for our green-fingered friends.

Sophie from lookinsidemygarden on TikTok has posted a helpful video listing the things she recommends you add to your to do list in March. These include planting “bear roots and shrubs” and painting fences. Gardeners are also urged to add layer of munch to their borders.

In addition, it is an ideal time of year to divide the perennials you have already got in the garden and replant them.

Next, Sophie says you should cut back any deciduous grasses, and comb your evergreen grasses

In March, rotating seedlings in a greenhouse is also ideal to “make sure they all get plenty of light”.

In the garden as a whole, the gardener says flower seeds should be sewn.

This month is also one for jet washing, and buying “bargain” perennials before they get bigger.

To deter slugs, nematode treatment needs to be done, Sophie says, to get rid of the slugs.

Meanwhile, flowers should be fed, especially roses.

Further, it is advised that you pot up your dahlias.

But do this indoors because they do not like the cold.

If you’ve got seedlings, it might be time to do some pinching out. Do your cuttings also, placing “tempting” bits of green growth in water so they can flourish.

Sophie personally spruces up her decking at this time of year.

The TikToker adds that lawn care will be the next thing on the to do list.

Sophie wrote under her video: “Finally we have sunshine and there is no better time to make a start on some jobs in March!“Here are a few things you can be doing now!

"Remember when you’re gardening on a budget NOW is the time you can save serious money by doing a few things.”
