Pets, especially dogs and cats, are curious creatures that like to roam around gardens sniffing, chewing, licking and biting plants, bushes and trees. While this may not seem like an issue, certain plants can cause your pets a lot of harm. One popular plant in particular that gardeners need to watch out for is chrysanthemums. Chrysanthemums are popular due to their beautiful, vibrant blooms and can often be found in supermarket bouquets and flower beds.

However, the popular plant can harm pets as it contains pyrethrins, a pesticide found naturally in some chrysanthemums. In severe cases, pets can experience loss of coordination and depression.

These pretty flowers often bloom in late summer and autumn and come in different forms. Some look similar to daisies, while others have multi-petalled pompoms.

You’re more likely to find them in warm, sunny areas with well-drained soil and plenty of shelter.

Some of the most common chrysanthemums in the UK are 'Stallions', which come in white, pink and yellow, and 'Lollipops', which come in white, pink, red and yellow.

However, a plethora of garden plants, including lilies, English ivy, azaleas, and foxgloves, can harm your pets.

English ivy, which often grows on trees, fences, and buildings, can cause vomiting, hypersalivation, abdominal pains, and diarrhoea if a pet ingests it.

Azaleas contain grayanotoxins, which can cause vomiting, drooling, weakness, diarrhoea, and depression in animals. In severe cases, pets can go into comas or die.

Lilies, while beautiful, can be toxic to animals and can lead to kidney damage if they're ingested, which can be fatal in some cases.

Foxgloves can be found in woodlands and gardens and contain toxic cardiac glycosides, which can result in serious poisoning if your pet ingests them.

If you’re unsure whether the plants in your garden could harm your pets, inspect your garden thoroughly.

It’s also best to avoid purchasing plants that could harm your pets.
