While Split Fiction is a multiplayer-only experience, you only actually need one copy in order to play online with friends.

As long as one person owns the game, a friend can download and install the Friend's Pass on their platform of choice. After sending an invite to the person with the pass installed, both users can enjoy the game despite only owning one copy.
