Drivers risk ‘ban’ and heavy fine due to simple spider mistake

Duncan said: "It’s vital that all drivers are 100% focused on what they are doing while behind the wheel. You are in charge of a two-tonne piece of metal travelling at speed, so distractions can be fatal.

"If your concentration is suddenly diverted by something inside the vehicle this could constitute driving without due care and attention or careless driving."

MotorEasy explains that road users found guilty of careless driving will be hit with between three and nine penalty points on a driving licence.

Meanwhile, road users will face a £2,500 fine with individuals also at risk of being disqualified from driving.

Analysis from Select Car Leasing suggests that around 21% of Brits say they have a genuine phobia of spiders.

It means individuals are likely to become hysterical if a spider gets inside a vehicle.

Genuinely scared motorists will likely try anything to remove the insect from their vehicle, diverting all focus away from the road despite travelling at high speeds.

Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing said: "If you’re likely to become dangerously distracted in your car upon spotting an eight-legged creature while driving, it’s wise to take steps to stop them entering your vehicle in the first place.

"The most obvious place to start is decluttering your vehicle’s interior, thereby removing any food sources for spiders. Pick up those crisp packets, bin the sandwich wrappers and vacuum the interior.

"Try not to give spiders a place to hide, either, which means removing any unnecessary items from the cabin.

"You should also clean your car’s air vents regularly as this is another spider hiding hotspot."
