Gardens will come into sharp focus for many as the weather gradually improves, and many people will be looking to get them into top shape before summer hits.

As spring often brings damp weather, moss in gardens can often become more prevalent.

Moss is considered a nuisance as it’s known to rapidly take over areas, particularly in lawns.

This spread of moss also creates dense mats which crowd out the other desirable plants in your garden which prevents them from receiving sunlight, nutrients and water which are needed to thrive and to have a desirable outside area.

Fortunately, a cheap and easy way homeowners are urged to use as it helps to effectively get rid of moss in gardens using an everyday item found in your kitchen.

Chris Bonnet, founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk,said: "With the arrival of spring, we can expect rain showers and high humidity, which create the ideal conditions for moss growth.

"While moss growing on trees in your garden can be a charming sight, if you notice moss spreading on hard surfaces in your garden, then it’s time to take action to prevent safety hazards.

"You don’t need to reach for chemical removals to tackle moss, as certain household items work just as well."

One such household item he recommends is salt which is only 65p from leading supermarkets such as Asda.

Opting for a less chemical approach when tackling moss is by far the better option as it helps plants and soil to grow better, as well as being less harmful to local wildlife that call your garden home.

Mr Bonnet explained that by mixing together effective remedies, likely to be found in your cupboards, you can effectively get rid of moss.

He said: "A classic saltwater solution is great for tackling stubborn moss. Mix salt into warm water, spray the solution to the moss, and allow it to air dry."

The expert added that by adding the salt mix to moss, it will help dry it out and kill it in a more "natural way".

Removing moss from your gardens is particularly pertinent when it begins growing on driveways, patio slabs and tarmac pathways which are known to create slippery surfaces.

Alongside being unsightly, moss can also be a safety hazard if left neglected.

Salt works effectively at removing moss as it is a natural desiccant which helps dry out and remove it by dehydrating its growth, thus preventing it from thriving.

The popular kitchen staple is also a natural alternative to many chemical moss killers with a simple approach of sprinkling salt on mossy areas, leaving it for a while and then scrubbing the dead moss away for a garden to be proud of by the summertime.
