Hydrangeas will be revived with one simple watering method

Hydrangeas are beautiful and striking flowers with their multitudes of tiny petals and gorgeous colours.

However, once cut from their bushes and placed in vases, these gorgeous flowers can quickly wilt and look less than their best.

If your cut hydrangeas aren’t lasting as long as you’d like, there’s one trick that can bring them straight back to life.

Jennifer Petritz, horticulturist and president of the American Hydrangea Society, told Martha Stewart that the reason hydrangeas are so prone to wilting is in their name.

She said the scientific name for hydrangea is Hydrangea macrophylla. Hydra is Greek for "water" and macrophylla means "big leaves." Therefore, "Hydrangea macrophylla equals big-leaved water hog!"

Water is all through hydrangeas from the stem to the leaves to the petals, so they are also quick to wilt when they dry out.

There are ways to keep them looking fresh though.

Once they begin to look limp and flat, fill a large bucket or your sink with cool water and dunk the entire hydrangea flower - head included - in the water. Make sure it’s entirely submerged and leave it for five to ten minutes.

Because hydrangeas drink through their petals this simple hack will revitalise your blooms and have them fresh in minutes.

Following this, trim their stems then quickly dip the cut ends into boiling water.

While it seems crazy, this will help dissolve any sap that's blocking the stems so they can drink easily. After this, place the flowers into a vase filled with fresh room-temperature water.

This hack can keep your hydrangeas lasting days longer. To keep them healthy-looking, make sure you place your vase out of direct sunlight and in a cool room, as sunlight and heat can cause cut hydrangeas to wilt faster.
