'I'm a dog expert and this is how you can fly abroad with your pooch'

Traveling with your dog may seem like a challenge, especially when flying abroad, but with the right preparation and mindset, it can be a smooth and even enjoyable experience for both you and your four-legged companion.

Cesar Millan, renowned dog rehabilitation expert and star of the popular show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan and Best Western's travel with pets expert, offered valuable advice for pet owners planning to travel with their dogs.

Before heading to the airport or booking a hotel, the expert said to make sure you do thorough research as each airline has its own pet policies, so it’s essential to understand and look up the rules regarding pet travel.

Cesar Millan said: "Put [your pet] in the crate for a few hours, put him in the car, and help him associate a calm feeling with the crate and travel.

"The best and most natural sedation is to take them for a long, even longer, the longest walk that day, so the dog is so tired it’s almost in hibernation."

Your dog can sense your anxiety, which may make them more stressed during the journey so preparing well in advance, by creating a calm and familiar environment for your pet will help ease the transition when it’s time to travel.

Whether it’s your dog’s bed, blanket, or favourite toy, having an item with a comforting scent from home can help them feel secure and relaxed in new and unknown surroundings.

Dogs really rely on their sense of smell, so bringing something familiar can make a big difference and make them feel more comfortable.

When you arrive at your destination, take your dog for a walk to help them get to know the surrounding area and when you get to your hotel room, make sure to enter first.

This allows you to claim the space and set boundaries for your dog before they explore.

When traveling with your dog, it’s important to always clean up after them and be sure to carry waste bags with you at all times, to avoid any unexpected suprises.

If your dog will be traveling in a crate, take the time to acclimate them to it at home beforehand, which will help ease their anxiety as well as yours during the trip.

By preparing ahead of time, you can ensure a more relaxed and pleasant experience for both you and your pet.
