How to set up bird feeder during nesting season with 1 key food

To help these hardworking birds care for their young, experts are urging bird lovers to enhance their feeders with high-energy, protein-rich foods.

Sean McMenemy, garden wildlife expert and founder of Ark Wildlife, told Express.co.uk: “Spring is a vital time for garden birds, especially as the busy breeding season begins.

“Offering a steady supply of high-quality food gives adult birds the energy they need to prepare and care for their young.”

The best way to help birds during this critical period is to focus on foods that provide a calorie-dense boost.

Sean recommends filling your feeders with black sunflower seeds, which are packed with fat, protein, and essential oils, giving birds the nutrients they need to stay strong and active.

Another excellent choice is fat balls, specifically those that are high in quality, as they are made with a blend of animal and vegetable fats, as well as sunflower and mixed seeds, offering a mix of nutrition and energy.

“With their high-fat content, every beakful delivers a calorie-dense boost, essential for busy birds caring for their young,” said Sean.

Alongside these nutrient-rich food options, it's important to keep your feeders clean and clutter-free, as unkempt or dirty bird feeders can promote the spread of diseases and germs.

You may also consider installing nest boxes, which provide crucial habitats for birds who have lost their natural nesting sites due to the decline of national woodlands and hedgerows.

If you're planning on setting up a nest box, it's important to position it in a sheltered spot, away from direct sunlight and shielded from harsh winds.

It should also be at least three metres off the ground to ensure adequate protection for the birds and their chicks.

The box should also be tilted slightly downwards to safeguard it from rain.

By supporting the parents during this crucial time, you’re not only helping them thrive, but you’re also contributing to the next generation of birds.

“The best part? Seeing fledglings visit your garden – a heartwarming reminder of the difference you’ve made!” Sean added.
