Nothing lasts forever, and nothing comes for free, or so the sayings go. But whoever came up with these pearls of wisdom obviously wasn’t well versed in the world of spring onions.

That’s because there’s a really easy food hack to get infinite spring onions from a single packet - by regrowing them over and over again.

You don’t need any posh kit or a high end greenhouse - you can regrow spring onions with just a jar of water.

According to food experts, spring onions will fully regrow into a new spring onion if you chop the bottom off - the bulb looking part which has the string-like roots protruding from the bottom - and place it in a bowl of water.

Normally, when preparing a spring onion, you’ll trim the bulb off the bottom and bin it, using the rest of the onion for cooking. 

But instead, just chuck that bulb end in a bowl of water, pop it on your windowsill and it will regrow an entire new spring onion.

Once it’s regrown, you can just do the same thing again next time and repeat the process forever - infinite spring onions at no extra cost. Spring onion sellers hate this one trick!

According to AllRecipes: “Green onions, aka scallions or spring onions, are sold with a root end that you always trim off before using the green stalks and slim white bulb in recipes.

“But did you know you can encourage those root ends to regrow new green onions?

"I haven't bought [spring] onions in two years (except to demo this tip).

“All you need is a starter bunch of green onions, a jar, and fresh water.”

To do it, slice off the ends of the bulbs leaving the roots attached. Stand the bulbs root-end down in a small jar but leave the top edges above the water line. Stand it on a windowsill, and keep the roots moist. After that, they will grow quickly. Simply keep the roots underwater and change the water once a week.

Some prefer to then transfer them to soil, either in a garden or plantpot, to guarantee an even stronger grow, but this isn’t strictly necessary.
