Motorists are being urged to check their eyesight after experts warned that struggling to see the road at night could be a sign they need an eye test.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the brightness of modern car headlights, which are leaving many drivers "dazzled" and at greater risk of accidents.

With advancements in headlight technology, newer vehicles are equipped with powerful LED and xenon lights, which can improve visibility for the driver but create intense glare for oncoming traffic.

For those already experiencing vision problems, this effect can be even more dangerous.

If drivers find themselves struggling to see clearly in the dark, experts say it could be an indication of worsening eyesight, and they should book an eye test as soon as possible.

Authorities have also taken action, with police forces in some areas carrying out random roadside vision checks to ensure motorists are fit to drive.

Poor eyesight is a significant factor in road accidents, and drivers who fail to meet the legal vision standard could face penalties, including fines or even losing their license.

Motoring expert James Harding, from Blackcircles, stressed the risks associated with compromised vision behind the wheel.

"Driving with impaired eyesight is a risk at any time, but particularly at night. Headlights can cause issues with glare, and hazards become less visible. If you’re struggling to see the road ahead, it’s a clear sign that you should get your eyes tested," he explained.

To combat the issue, experts recommend that drivers consider glasses with anti-glare (AG) and anti-reflective (AR) coatings, which help to reduce glare from headlights and improve night-time vision.

Additionally, drivers should practice safe habits, such as increasing their following distance at night and avoiding direct eye contact with oncoming headlights to minimize the effects of glare.

With road safety organizations emphasizing the importance of clear vision, drivers are being reminded to take proactive steps if they notice any difficulties while driving at night.

Booking a routine eye test could make all the difference, not just for their safety, but for the safety of everyone on the road.
