Cleaning grout regularly means you can keep it looking like new for longer.

If you leave grout untouched over time moisture will seep into its structure leading to nasty mould taking over and discolouring the grout. This is especially the case in showers.

If it’s not mould taking over your shower grout, it’s most likely down to a build-up of shampoo and shower gel.

You might naturally go to bleach or white vinegar when it comes to cleaning grout.

However, both are corrosive, so while they might whiten stains, they can also do more damage than good on grout. As a general rule, you want to start cleaning with the mildest product you have.

While there are several chemical products designed to clean grout, they can be very expensive and can contain toxic chemicals.

Opting for the natural route, Jetara who goes by @hireahomemaker on TikTok has shared a “simple and effective” method.

Showing the camera the tile floor grout in her shower stained with mould and dirt, Jetara said: “If the grout in your shower looks anything like mine, this video is for you.”

To bring up your stained grout so it “looks amazing”, the cleaning pro claimed that “all you need is three products” - washing up liquid, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

Jetara just applied all of the ingredients straight to the stained grout without combining them.

Next, you’ll want to grab a grout brush, like this one from Lakeland for £3.99, or an old toothbrush will suffice.

Using your grout brush or old toothbrush, give the products “a good smearing over onto the grout”.

When you’re finished, let the concoction “sit and bubble” for 10 minutes. This gives it time to sink into any dirt and makes it easier to remove.

The cleaner finished off by giving her shower grout a rinse with water which revealed gleaming white grout.

Hydrogen peroxide is a versatile, colourless liquid that quickly neutralises bacteria and germs and bleaches surfaces without leaving toxic residue behind like bleach, making it a reliable cleaning agent.

Tile experts at Tile Experience also recommend this method but without washing up liquid. They said: “Try a solution of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. This is a great mix as baking soda is only mildly abrasive and causes less damage than caustic materials and hydrogen peroxide is a natural alternative to bleach that will still brighten the grout.”
