VED car tax warning to impact thousands of drivers from April

Despite this, many individuals with disabilities are still set to be exempt from paying VED charges in 2025/26.

However, motorists not paying a penny towards their VED fees must still ensure they get a vehicle taxed by law.

Octopus Electric Vehicles has reminded road users of the importance of remembering to tax their car even if motorists know they won’t pay.

Octopus explained: “Important to note: you need to register your vehicle even if you are tax-exempt for any reason (such as disability). Your tax bill might be £0, but the info is needed for administrative purposes.”

Motorists can secure an exemption from VED costs if they receive a range of disability benefits.

This included the higher rate mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and the enhanced rate mobility component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).

Those getting the enhanced rate mobility component of Adult Disability Payment (ADP) and the higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment will also not pay.

Fees will not be due from motorists who get the War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement or Armed Forces Independence Payment.

The vehicle must be registered in the disabled person or nominated diver’s name and must only be used for the affected individual's personal needs.

Officials also stress the exemption will only apply to just one vehicle at a time meaning drivers cannot get the benefit on multiple cars.

GOV.UK said: “You must tax your vehicle even if you do not have to pay anything, for example if you’re exempt because you’re disabled.

“You’ll need to meet all the legal obligations for drivers before you can drive.”
