BAFTA viewers ‘genuinely embarrassed’ by Take That performance | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

The BAFTA Film Awards 2025 surprised viewers with a performance of their hit song Greatest Day on Sunday, but fans were left unimpressed.

A remixed version of the iconic track featured in the nominated film Anora.

Mark Owen, Howard Donald and Gary Barlow all took to the stage during the ceremony, though Robbie Williams and Jason Orange were absent.

Although the crowd in attendance were thrilled to see the iconic boy band return to the spotlight, viewers watching the show at home were rather baffled.

One X (formerly Twitter) user fumed: “Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet sat front row at the #BAFTAs and the best we can produce is a 2008 song from Take That and it was a remix. I’m genuinely embarrassed.”

Someone else wrote with plenty of crying emojis: “The likes of Kylie Jenner and Ariana Grande watching Take That perform is sending me.”

“Oh Take That remote over there and turn this off #BAFTAs,” another viewer fumed.

“Well it was going fairly painlessly till Take That cheesed up the place…” a fourth wrote.

And a final critic wrote: “Oh my what happened take that used to be able to sing this song #BAFTAs.”

However, not all the comments were negative, as one Take That fan posted: “Wow what a performance from TAKE THAT. Was just staring at my tv screen the whole time.”

Despite the backlash, Hollywood stars and British A-listers at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London were ecstatic during the performance.

BAFTA organisers announced the performance more than a week ahead of the ceremony, sharing a statement: “Known for their electrifying live shows and timeless appeal, Take That will bring their signature energy and charisma to the ceremony, creating a highlight of the evening.

“Their appearance promises to be an unforgettable moment, whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their music, this is an experience you won’t want to miss.”

Barlow and the rest of the band featured heavily in the 2024 film Better Man, which raised eyebrows by featuring the life of Robbie Williams performed by a CGI chimpanzee.

The film was nominated for Best Visual Effects, but lost out to the Timothée Chalamet-led blockbuster, Dune: Part Two.

The BAFTA Film Awards 2025 are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
