Remove green algae from garden buildings 'effortlessly'

Green algae can quickly take over garden sheds, log cabins, and other outdoor buildings, turning them from a beautiful addition to an unsightly nuisance.

But, while it may feel like a persistent problem, it doesn’t have to be, as you can tackle green algae with ease – and for as little as 25p – by following a few simple steps.

Sam Jenkinson, shed and log cabin expert from  Tiger, has shared his top tip to combat and prevent algae growth, offering a low-cost solution to a problem many Brits face in their gardens.

"Algae thrives in damp, shaded areas, and poor drainage creates the ideal breeding ground for green algae. Without proper water management, moisture builds up and the algae will flourish," explained Sam.

"This is an issue for wooden structures, such as sheds and log cabins, as when algae grows on wood, it retains moisture which can then seep into the wood, which over time can lead to the deterioration of a garden building’s structural integrity."

The key to preventing algae from taking hold is simple: managing moisture levels.

This can be achieved by ensuring proper drainage around your garden building, maximising sunlight and airflow, and applying weatherproofing treatments.

These actions, according to Sam, will help reduce the conditions that make it easy for algae to thrive.

But if green algae has already set in, Sam recommends a straightforward cleaning process that won’t break the bank.

"You can use items already in your kitchen cupboards, such as bleach and vinegar, to create an effective cleaning solution that will only set you back around 25p," he said.

To clean your garden building, mix one part bleach with 10 parts water, or use a gentler, eco-friendly vinegar solution if you prefer.

Simply soak the algae-affected areas with your cleaning solution using a spray bottle or cloth and allow it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes.

Once the solution has had time to work, use a stiff-bristled brush to scrub the algae away, reapplying the solution as necessary for stubborn patches.

The final step is simple: rinse the area with a garden hose to wash away the algae and cleaning solution, leaving your shed or log cabin algae-free.

While prevention is key, Sam’s affordable solution ensures that when algae does appear, it can be effortlessly removed, allowing your garden buildings to stay in top condition.
