If you've noticed a visible white or green chalky substance on your shower head, it's likely limescale.

Other signs of a limescale problem on your shower head include water spraying in different directions, an uneven water flow and decreased water pressure.

Most people resort to using specialised limescale-removing products to clean the mineral deposits, but these can be expensive.

However, there are plenty of natural methods available for removing limescale from appliances and fixtures.

Cleaning expert, Manish Jain, the founder of Ministry of Cleaning, suggested using vinegar and a plastic bag to remove limescale from shower heads.

He exclusively told Express.co.uk that vinegar "works a treat on shower heads". All you need is some white vinegar and a plastic bag similar to a sandwich bag.

He explained: "Fill a small plastic bag or sandwich bag with white vinegar and put the shower head inside, securing it with a rubber band. The acidity of the solution will eat away at any grime and limescale, unclogging the shower head holes.

"For best results, leave the shower head for an hour or even overnight and don’t forget to rinse before using."

However, Mr Jain warned homeowners not to use vinegar on nickel or gold-plated shower heads, as it can damage the finish.

Sarah McGregor, a bathroom expert from Victorian Plumbing also suggested using vinegar as the acid in the natural solution can break down the chalky deposits.

However, she recommended using baking soda and water as well to remove the stubborn water deposits.

Before getting to work removing the limescale, it's important to remove the shower head, being careful to keep the small rubber washer safe.

Next, place the shower head in a plastic container before mixing up two or three teaspoons of baking soda with water to make a creamy paste.

Ms McGregor continued: "Apply this mixture to the shower head and leave for 30 minutes while it breaks down those pesky limescale deposits. After letting the baking soda break up the limescale, grab a cleaning toothbrush and scrub away any excess dirt.

"Then rinse thoroughly in warm water, reattach the clean shower head, then run the shower for at least 30 seconds before using. This is crucial as it will flush out any residual vinegar and bits of limescale into the shower tray and down the drain.”
