Garmin watches are reportedly breaking - here’s how to fix yours

Outdoor company Garmin has issued a statement after users took to social media to report their watches were getting stuck on their boot-up screens, rendering them unusable.

The problem seems to revert some Garmin devices to their startup screens, many of which show Garmin’s blue triangle logo and then get stuck on that graphic.

According to TechRadar, some models of Garmin’s popular Forerunner, Fenis, Epix, Vivoactive, Venu and Lily devices are affected, but it seems this is not a bug that is appearing on every Garmin watch across the board.

“I have a Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar which out of the blue has been cycling through the pictured screen (blue triangle),” Reddit user SuspiciousCucumber16 posted. “It’s only 14 months old, so outside of warranty. Outside of call centre help hours so no help there.”

“If you figure this out message me,” user Purds10777 replied. “This has just happened to my forerunner 255 music around 25 minutes ago. It's only a month old”.

The r/Garmin subreddit is full of similar complaints and the website Downdetector that lets people report problems with tech services showed a spike in Garmin reports on Tuesday afternoon.

I am currently wearing a Garmin Instinct 3 watch that I have in for testing and it is working and connecting to GPS with no issue.

"Garmin is researching reports of devices displaying a blue triangle when starting a GPS activity," a Garmin spokesperson told Express.co.uk. "A reset by pressing and holding the power button may restore functionality. We will provide more information on a permanent fix when available."

Garmin’s official support website was displaying an acknowledgement of the ongoing problems on Tuesday afternoon.

“We are researching reports of devices displaying a blue triangle when starting a GPS activity,” the message said. “Holding the power button until the unit powers off, then turning it back on may restore functionality temporarily. We will provide more information on a permanent fix when available.”

This echoes the advice given to Express.co.uk by Garmin.

I can’t test this fix as my watch is working, but if you are suffering from a bricked device then the above method is well worth trying.

These sorts of issues are normally remedied relatively quickly but it’s notable that Garmin’s initial response involves the user needing to manually override the issue, along with the fact it says it will only make your watch work “temporarily”. It means users will have to wait to see if and when the firm is able to provide a full fix.
