Sergio Garcia identifies likely DP World Tour return date as LIV star eyes Ryder Cup spot | Golf | SportSergio Garcia has confirmed that he is eyeing up a place at the BMW International Open in July as he prepares to return to the DP World Tour. The 45-year-old is set to embark on his fourth season in LIV Golf before linking up with the DP World Tour later this year. He has committed to featuring in all 14 LIV Golf events between February and August. And the 2017 Masters champion will also be hoping to pick up enough points to clinch a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup squad, with the tournament scheduled for September. Garcia terminated his DP World Tour membership in May 2023 after losing an appeal over the fines he was given for his decision to join LIV Golf the previous year. According to Golf Magic, the blockbuster star has paid off over £800,000 of fines to return to the DP Tour. And he will be given a Category One membership. When quizzed about his return date by the outlet, Garcia wrote over text: “It looks like the BMW International Open in Munich, but that might change.” And he confirmed he is still serving a ban imposed on him by the DP World Tour that will prevent him playing in Bahrain this week and also keep him out of the Dubai Desert Classic. “Yes [I am still suspended],” he added. “I would have played in Dubai if not.” Last autumn, a DP World Tour spokesperson stated: “Sergio Garcia submitted his application to return to membership of the DP World Tour for the 2025 season ahead of the deadline on Sunday November 17. “He has paid his fines but will have to serve his suspensions before he can play on the DP World Tour. He is a member in Category One for the 2025 season.” Garcia will have the opportunity to accumulate some European Ryder Cup points at The Masters in April. The veteran is allowed to play at the tournament due to the fact that he is a former champion. But he will need to either qualify or be invited to play at the US PGA in the spring, and the US Open and the Open in the summer. The BMW International Open will be played just two months before the cut-off point to gain eligibility to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup. Garcia will be able to rack up Ryder Cup points in a number of ways on the DP World Tour but cannot accrue points during LIV Golf events. Source link Posted: 2025-01-28 01:47:02 |
