Complete one garden task now to get lush lawn during spring

Janaury is finally on its way out, which means we're one step closer to spring.

That means it won't be too long until we're back out in the garden again. But, if you want your lawn to stay in good condition, you may want to complete one simple task.

That's because, according to gardening guru Ish, known as gardening.with.ish on TikTok, people should be doing one thing to better their chances of a luscious lawn. It's really simple to do too.

In the candid clip, he said: "Today in the garden I'm going to be going through some easy steps to get a nice, healthy start to your lawn from January. Now, I know there are going to be some keen gardeners out there who want to get back on the lawn and get started, but the long and short of it is it's still winter.

"It's still cold and even though the sun is shining today, this grass is still going to be in a dormant state, as it has been since around about November. The only thing we're going to do today is introduce some air into the soil with nothing but a garden fork."

Ish said there are two reasons why using a fork on your lawn may be a "great idea". To begin, it introduces more airflow to the root of your plants, and this will help your grass to thrive better.

He also noted it can lead to you having "much thicker grass". In the winter, we get a lot of cold and wet weather, and the last thing you want is for the compacted soil to start to waterlog.

Adding some drainage holes will really aid this problem, and he said the process is simple. All you have to do is take your fork, and put it about four or fives inches into the grass.

After you've reached that point, simply pull it out, and repeat the process around the lawn. It's not a quick task to complete, but Ish said it will help "massively".

The video has been viewed hundreds of times since it was shared, and people have been quick to comment too. They had all sorts of opinions on the matter.

One person said: "No, in the south it keeps growing in winter." Another wrote: "I have started getting mushrooms in my grass, what can I do to get rid of them?"

A third also quipped: "I have squirrels to do that for me."

If you weren't aware, it's actually good to fork your lawn. This is because it works to boost soil health by allowing improved air and water penetration to the roots.

This can lead to both a healthier and thicker lawn. Not to mention, it's super beneficial if your lawn has compacted soil or a thick layer of thatch.
