With winter's chill taking hold, many of us have no choice but to whack the heating up to the max.

But it's common to find that it takes a long time for the heat to circulate properly and warm up the room effectively.

A plumber from Your Plumber has come forward with a key change you can make to help you "channel the warmth" into your room more swiftly, which could save you both time and money.

One crucial step to maximise your heating efficiency is to remove any blockages from your radiators, the expert advises.

The expert has shared a nifty trick for keeping your home toasty – rearrange furniture like sofas that might be absorbing heat.

To "channel the warmth into the room", they suggest to "put shelves above any radiators to stop wasted hot air rising."

Another tip is to "cover a thin sheet of card with tinfoil and place it behind your radiators."

This simple DIY hack will "reflect the heat back into the room" speeding up the warming process and maintaining the temperature for longer.

It's also crucial to "bleed your radiators" to eliminate "rid of air pockets". You can test if bleeding is necessary by feeling around each radiator to ensure it heats evenly, not just at the bottom.

Mark Ingram, a technical gas and plumbing tutor at Engineering Real Results (ERR), spoke about the importance of bleeding radiators: "As time goes on and the temperatures get cooler the demand will only get higher and people may find they have to wait days for an engineer to become available to fix their problem."

He added: "If when you touch all of the radiators you notice any cold spots, you might need to bleed air out of the system, which is an easy job people can do themselves.

"With bigger concerns, you should always seek advice from a registered Gas Safe engineer."
