Five gardening jobs to get your garden in good shape today

Keeping your garden in tip top shape is thought to be a complicated task, but it doesn't have to be.

People enjoy gardening for a plethora of reasons. They love connecting with nature, prefer to grow their own produce, for its relaxing qualities, and to help with thier mental health by reducing stress and anxiety.

But when it comes to maintaining your garden, there can be so much to do that it's difficult to wrap your head around exactly what is essential. Here is where horticultural expert David Domoney comes in.

The celebrity gardener, who's face you may have seen on ITV1's This Morning or on Love Your Garden alongside Alan Titchmarsh, has put together a list of five jobs you need to do today to make sure your garden is in the best shape possible.

Here's everything you need to know.

Clean your greenhouse

A clean greenhouse in an effective and efficient greenhouse. Make sure to clear all the leaves out from gutters and the roof.

Once it is all cleared, this allows it to take in the maximum amount of light possible. Speeding up the growing process.

Wipe dust off your plants

Just in case you didn't know, dust can appear on your houseplants and affect the amount of light they take in. So make sure to give them a wipe down, preferably with a houseplant-safe wetwipe or pieces of wet tissue paper.

Pruning

Your next task is to prune large, overhanging branches. This helps, especially during the hot summer months, as once these plants grow their leaves, they may block sunlight from your garden.

Weeding and bark chip

Weed and apply bark chip mulch to your garden borders to help them retain moisture - but they will look much more attractive.

Note you must prioritise any sensitive plants first. Plus, do not do this on a cold and frosty day, as if you do you risk insulating the frost which has a negative impact on your plants.

Go to your local garden centre

Now is as good a time as any to make your way down to your local garden centre. Being out of season, you will be able to reap the rewards of bigger bargains - particularly if you have any tools or other garden items that need replacing.
