This weekend, the BAFTA-nominated A Complete Unknown starring Timothée Chalamet hits cinemas. Marking the release of this long-awaited biopic, British music and audio pioneer Cambridge Audio has polled over 5000 fans worldwide to determine the Top 10 Bob Dylan songs of all time. The Bard has written over 600 tracks over his almost 70-year career as a singer-songwriter, and below are the ones fans deem to be his very best.

10. Desolation Row (1965)

Dylan’s sign-off to his revolutionary Highway 61 Revisited comes in at an epic 11 minutes and 21 seconds. Its poetic, surreal lyrics are full of imagery and capture a universal feeling of troubled times that transcend the generations.

9. Simple Twist of Fate (1975)

One of Dylan's most emotional and personal songs is found on his 15th studio album, Blood on the Tracks. Simple Twist of Fate’s lyrics are left open to interpretation as they deal with themes of love, fate, bitterness, regret and the unpredictability of life as time passes by.

8. Subterranean Homesick Blues (1965)

The first track from his Bringing It All Back Home album was one of Dylan’s original electric recordings. The fast-paced bluesy rock track with politically rebellious lyrics was the Bard’s big move away from traditional folk music, a key theme in the new biopic A Complete Unknown. The track was the Bard’s first Top 40 hit in the US and entered the Top 10 in the UK Singles Chart.

7. Lay Lady Lay (1969)

Alongside the other songs on the Nashville Skyline album, Lay Lady Lay features Dylan’s lower vocals replacing his higher nasal style from his earlier work. The track was originally written for the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy, but wasn’t finished in time for the film’s release. Meanwhile, the Bard had planned to write it for Barbra Streisand in what had been set to be a duet. The song was his last Top 10 US hit and reached No 5 in the UK Singles Chart.
