People are only just realising windows have a winter setting

Brits across the country are only just realising that their windows have a hidden winter and summer setting.

Draughty windows are not only a sign of energy waste but can also increase heating and bills.

It can lead to sickness like colds and respiratory infections. Plus, there is a risk of developing dampness and mould, which has its own health concerns.

2025 has been a cold start to many with numerous weather warnings and snow leading to many of us wrapping at home and putting the heating on.

If you have a draughty window you may be tempted to buy a handy draft excluder, but before you head to the shops to buy one you may want to listen to @interiorstyled_ advice who took to Instagram to alert Brits to a hidden window setting.

@interiorstyled said: “You’ll see a little notch at nine o'clock. That is the summer setting so how to adjust is with an alan key. Straight up 12 o’clock is neutral and round to three o’clock is the winter setting.

“When you close the window and pull the handle down it's going to be tighter and therefore it's now in the winter setting.”

In summer mode, the window sash opens from the top, allowing outside air to enter the room whereas in winter mode the window sash is closed.

The Instagram account added: "There appears to be conflicting opinions as to whether it’s a winter setting per se, but essentially the concept is by making minor adjustments to the cams you can retighten the seals and subsequently reduce heat loss."

The viral video has clearly resonated with people across the country with it being viewed over 1.4 million times.

One user said: "I never knew this! Why doesn’t anyone tell you?!."

Another added: "Oh my god no way. When the winds not kicking too much I’ll have a look. Thanks for the tip."

"This is the type of thing we should be made aware of. Costs nothing and will help people reduce energy costs", said a third.

However one user had a differing opinion calling the tip "absolute rubbish".

The account added: "I spent 30 years running a double glazing company. I’ve never heard so much rubbish in my life. "Good luck when the locks break because you’ve adjusted them."
