Russia experienced widespread internet outages impacting telecom companies and online platforms, local outlets claimed.

The country saw widespread disruptions to internet services on Tuesday, according to independent Russian outlet Meduza.

Internet monitoring site Downdetector.su reportedly showed issues with mobile phone providers such as Megafon, MTS, Rostelecom, and Tele2.

Novaya Gazeta, another independent Russian outlet, added that people experienced issues accessing apps like Google, YouTube, Telegram, WhatsApp, and TikTok.

The outlet claimed Russia's largest digital service provider Rostelecom said the outages were not related to its networks.

Anton Gerashchenko, the former Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, said on social media platform X that "messengers haven't been affected by the outage".

He wrote: "A major Internet outage is happening in Russia right now, mobile communication is also offline, Russian media and Telegram channels report.

"According to reports from social media, some users say only Yandex seems to be working: the search engine gives answers to queries, but it's impossible to click on links. Interestingly, it seems that messengers haven't been affected by the outage."

Agency News, which operates on Telegram, said experts claimed the internet outages could have been caused by Roskomnadzor - Russia's Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media.

Roskomnadzor later confirmed that internet services has been restored after a "short-term disruption in connectivity", state-controlled outlet RIA Novost said.

It said: "A short-term disruption in connectivity was detected. Network operation was promptly restored by the duty services of the Center for Monitoring and Control of the Public Communications Network."

Roskomnadzor's press service is now trying to work out the cause of the outages, according to Telegram channel Mash.
