Dog trainer names the three 'worst breeds' that have issues with kids

Dog trainer and canine behaviourist Will Atherton has shared which three breeds are best avoided if you have children.

Buying or adopting a dog can be tricky, especially if you've got your heart set on a specifc breed. Some breeds love children while others can feel apprehensive and nervous around kids which can cause them to react.

Children can be unpredictable so it's important to choose a breed that are known for being patient and naturally protective of children.

Mr Atherton said in a short video on his YouTube channel: "What are the worst dog breeds for children?

"As a canine behaviourist, I specialise in when things go terribly wrong with dogs, and unfortunately, that often happens with bites towards children. And I see certain breeds cropping up time and time again."

Three worst dogs for children

1. Border Collie

Border Collies are medium-sized dogs known for herding sheep and livestock. They are energetic, eager to please, and even-tempered.

However, Mr Atherton warned that despite their ease of training, they are not the best dogs to have around children.

He said: "Contrary to popular belief, people think because they're so trainable, it means that they're easy dogs to live with, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

"Those herding instincts will kick in and if you don't fulfil the dog properly, which many people don't have the time or energy to do so, they will start herding your kids. By herding your kids, I mean chasing them around, biting their ankles."

2. Akita

The Akita is a loyal dog breed that has erect ears and comes in a plethora of colours. The breed is quiet and is often wary of strangers and other animals.

This breed is loving and affectionate with friends and family and enjoys human companionship. However, it is very protective.

According to the dog training expert, Akitas can be "incredible dogs" in the right situation, but some seem to have issues with children.

"Time and time again, I see them having serious issues with children, and it's never pretty when it happens," Mr Atherton said.

3. Dalmatian

Dalmatians are known for their spotted coat and the Walt Disney movie 101 Dalmatians. The breed was originally bred to guard horses and coaches.

Dalmatians are muscular dogs that can be wary and aloof around strangers. They're also good watchdogs and can be loyal and loving around their owners and people they know.

However, Mr Atherton said: "Most people don't realise the Dalmatian has one of the highest bite histories here in the UK, and oftentimes towards children."
