Rodrigo Bentancur huge injury scare as Tottenham star stretchered off against Liverpool | Football | Sport

Tottenham's injury woes worsened on Wednesday night as Rodrigo Bentancur was stretchered off during their League Cup clash against Liverpool.

The game was stopped just six minutes in when Bentancur went down off the ball shortly after a Spurs corner kick.

Bentancur had attempted to head an outswinging cross, but because of the trajectory of the ball, his attempt at a diving header failed.

Instead, the 27-year-old hit the deck at some speed and wasn't able to stand up following his collision with the floor.

Speaking on Sky Sports' commentary, Alan Smith said: "There's a lot of concern there. Bentancur went for the diving header, nobody challenged him I don't think. I think he just fell awkwardly."

The medical team were quick to tend to his needs, with the stretcher following shortly behind them.

Lead commentator Rob Hawthorne added: "Yeah, I think he stooped low to try and get his head on the ball and possibly ended up crashing into the ground and landing on his head which is a concern that Spurs could do without after such a bright start.

"Immediately players from both sides were urging the medics on such was the urgency of the situation with Rodrigo Bentancur."

Smith added: "You saw the reaction of his team-mates, they knew there pal was in a bit of trouble."

After a lengthy stoppage in play, Brennan Johnson came off the bench to replace the Uruguayan midfielder, with the game resuming shortly after.

Bentancur has just returned from a lengthy ban and could be set for another long spell on the sidelines, should the injury prove as serious as it first seemed.

Heralding Bentancur as a key part of his Spurs side, the Australian coach said last month: “They know we’re in a tough moment and, for Rodrigo, it has been even more frustrating because it’s not an injury which has kept him out.

“As I’ve said, he made a mistake, served his punishment now and wants to help the team.

“It’s good to have him back. He’s been working hard at training. In terms of Boxing Day, we’ll see, but certainly (a boost) just to have an extra body."

He featured for 64 minutes during Spurs' Boxing Day clash with Nottingham Forest, before playing a full 90 minutes in the draw with Wolves three days later.

Bentancur arrived at Tottenham from Juventus three years ago in a deal that could rise as high as £21.5million.
