How to keep slippery driveways ice-free without ‘harsh chemicals’

With freezing temperatures set to grip the UK this week, icy driveways, pathways, and patios are becoming a significant concern, especially during the early morning school run and commutes.

These slippery surfaces are not only inconvenient but can be a real hazard and danger during day-to-day life, with slips risking painful injuries.

Fortunately, you don't need to resort to costly, chemical-laden commercial de-icers, as you may already have the perfect item for de-icing your driveway in your kitchen. If not, it'll cost you just 65p to purchase.

The team at Lottomart recommends using a baking soda solution for its effectiveness and environmental benefits.

A spokesperson explained: "Choosing to melt ice with a solution including baking soda instead of a commercial de-icer has some real perks.

"It has a lower price tag, fewer chemicals, and chances are, you already have it in your kitchen."

Baking soda is less alkaline than the salts found in traditional de-icers, making it gentler on surfaces and less likely to cause damage to materials like brick, concrete and metal.

The experts added: "Baking soda is the least abrasive corrosive option compared to salt, cat litter, or commercial de-icers. It's safer for your driveway, neighbouring plants, garden, and pets, and you don't need to worry about long-term damage from harsh chemicals."

How to make the baking soda solution

First, gather 100g of baking soda and 4.5 litres of warm water. Combine these in a large container, continually stirring until the side completely dissolves.

Once mixed, pour or spray the solution directly onto icy surfaces like driveways, pathways, garden walkways, or patios. After a few minutes, the ice should start to melt.

To prevent the ice from refreezing again, you can pour some sand on the previously icy surface, which will help improve grip and further reduce the risk of slipping.
