Liverpool issue statement on Man Utd match postponement as meeting set | Football | SportHeavy snowfall on Merseyside across Saturday night, into Sunday morning, saw amber weather warnings for snow and rain issued in both Liverpool and Manchester. Such warnings suggest a potential risk to life and significant travel disruption, with tens of thousands of fans set to descend on Anfield if the match goes ahead. There are especially concerns surrounding travelling United fans who would have to make a longer journey on icy roads. These factors are what the safety advisory group will consider as opposed to the condition of the Anfield pitch and whether the surface is playable. Liverpool's club statement read: "A safety meeting was held this morning to assess the weather and travel conditions for today’s fixture against Manchester United at Anfield. "At this stage the match is planned to go ahead as normal and every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions. "We will update supporters just as soon as we can. Please take extra care out there, Reds." United then responded with their own statement, writing: "Our match against Liverpool is set to still go ahead at this stage, despite snow and weather warnings in the North West today. "Take care if you are travelling to the game — we will update you with the latest developments." Sunday's chaos is not the first time this season Liverpool dealt with the possibility of postponing a league match, with the Merseyside derby called off on safety grounds last month. The Reds' trip to Everton is yet to be officially rearranged and another missed match could cause a significant fixture pile-up for Arne Slot's side. Both Liverpool and United are currently preparing for the match to go ahead as scheduled, before hearing back from the safety advisory group. Source link Posted: 2025-01-05 11:51:38 |
